The blind princess Iolanta lives in a secluded garden, unaware of her affliction, shielded by her overprotective father King René. When the knight Vaudémont stumbles into the garden and falls in love with her, he inadvertently reveals her blindness to her. A Moorish physician declares that Iolanta can be cured — but only if she truly desires to see. Tchaikovsky's final opera is a luminous fairy tale about love, knowledge, and the courage to embrace the world as it is.
