Taraji P. Henson Makes Her Broadway Debut in August Wilson. Critics Are Calling It Superb.
Theatre5 min read2 days ago
On April 25, Taraji P. Henson walked onto the stage of the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in August Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone and delivered what critics are calling a superb Broadway debut. She plays Bertha Holly, proprietor of a Pittsburgh boardinghouse in 1911 where the human wreckage of the Great Migration arrives seeking something it cannot name. The production, directed by Debbie Allen with Cedric the Entertainer opposite Henson, averaged an 80% critical rating on opening night and, by consensus, reminded New York why Wilson's Pittsburgh Cycle is the American theater's supreme moral achievement.
