After completing a law degree at Oxford Brookes, Akhtar pursued acting training at the Actors Studio Drama School in New York, where he discovered an approach to performance rooted in authenticity rather than rigid methodology. His screen debut came in 2006, but it was his 2016 performance in the television film *Murdered by My Father*—a raw, devastating portrayal of a young man caught between filial duty and moral conscience—that established him as a major talent, earning him the historic 2017 BAFTA Television Award for Leading Actor. Since then, he has sustained a career of remarkable range, moving between independent cinema of genuine substance and mainstream entertainment while maintaining his commitment to theatre, becoming one of British cinema's most trusted character actors.
