Actor
Adjoa Andoh is a British-Ghanaian actress of commanding presence and intellectual depth, celebrated for four decades of transformative work across theatre, television, and film, and recently appointed MBE for her services to drama.
Defining moments and milestones
Adjoa Andoh signed her first Equity contract in 1985 with Theatre Centre and has since built a four-decade career of uncommon range, moving fluidly between classical theatre, prestige television drama, and film while simultaneously establishing herself as a director, writer, and one of Britain's most accomplished audiobook narrators. Her breakthrough on screen came through roles in *Doctor Who*, *Casualty*, and *EastEnders*, but her artistic identity crystallized through her work in classical theatre and her visionary 2019 production of *Richard II* at the Globe, which positioned her as a creative force reshaping how British theatre tells its stories. Now in her sixties, she remains actively engaged across all media, with *Bridgerton* and *Queen Charlotte* bringing her to global audiences while her numerous honorary fellowships and her 2025 MBE recognition cement her status as an elder stateswoman of British drama.
Appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to drama (June 2025); conceived, co-directed, and starred in *Richard II* at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (2019), the UK's first all-women-of-colour production of the play
