Choreographer
Akram Khan is a visionary British-Bangladeshi choreographer and dancer whose fusion of classical Kathak with contemporary movement has redefined the boundaries of 21st-century dance.
Defining moments and milestones
Akram Khan began his career as a dancer trained in both classical Indian Kathak and contemporary techniques, performing with leading companies before founding his eponymous company in 2000. His choreographic voice emerged as a radical synthesis of these traditions, gaining international recognition with works like *Desh* (2009) and the groundbreaking *Giselle* (2016) for English National Ballet, which demonstrated his ability to reimagine canonical works through a distinctly contemporary and culturally hybrid sensibility. Today, Khan stands as one of the most celebrated and commissioned choreographers working globally, with a body of work that has fundamentally expanded the vocabulary and possibilities of contemporary dance.
Created and choreographed *Giselle* for English National Ballet (2016), a radical contemporary reimagining of the Romantic ballet classic that became one of the most acclaimed and frequently performed new works in classical ballet repertory
