Tony Award-winning director whose visually audacious, genre-defying productions have redefined contemporary musical theatre through immersive spectacle and irreverent storytelling.
Defining moments and milestones
Beginning his career in New York's experimental theatre scene, Alex Timbers distinguished himself through visually inventive productions at venues including the Public Theater and New York Theatre Workshop. His breakthrough came with the 2018 Broadway production of Moulin Rouge!, which earned him a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical and established him as a leading voice in contemporary musical theatre. Since then, he has directed a succession of high-profile Broadway productions—Beetlejuice, Rocky, and Here Lies Love—each showcasing his distinctive approach to immersive, formally adventurous staging.
