After earning her credentials at the Royal Northern College of Music under Brigitte Fassbaender's tutelage, Alice Coote made her professional debut with Opera North in 1994, but it was her luminous 2000 performances as Ruggiero in *Alcina* at Edinburgh and as Poppea at the English National Opera that announced her arrival as a major interpretive force. Over the subsequent two decades, she has become an indispensable presence at the world's leading opera houses, commanding the mezzo-soprano repertoire with particular distinction in both female roles and the trouser-role canon—from Mozart and Handel to Strauss—while maintaining a parallel career as a recitalist of considerable artistry. Her recognition as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2026 underscores her standing as one of Britain's most significant musical ambassadors.
