Astrid Varnay was a Swedish-born American dramatic soprano who was one of the greatest Wagner sopranos of the 20th century. She debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1941 and became a legend at Bayreuth, performing there for over two decades. Her defining roles included Brünnhilde, Isolde, and Elektra.
