Founded in the Renaissance as a court chapel ensemble, the Bayerisches Staatsorchester evolved across five centuries into one of Europe's most storied orchestral institutions, anchoring the musical life of Bavaria through the leadership of towering conductors including Richard Strauss, Bruno Walter, and Hans Knappertsbusch. The ensemble's transition from princely court institution to democratic state orchestra following World War I marked a pivotal modernization, yet it has remained steadfastly committed to the Central European symphonic and operatic repertoire that defines its artistic identity. Under Vladimir Jurowski's direction since 2021, the orchestra continues to balance reverence for its deep historical roots with an ambitious contemporary profile, performing at the Bavarian State Opera and undertaking major international tours and recording projects.
Celebrated its 500th anniversary as one of the world's oldest continuously performing orchestras (2023)
