Formed in 1939 as a vocal ensemble at a school for blind African American students in Talladega, the Blind Boys of Alabama began as gospel traditionalists before gradually expanding their repertoire to encompass blues, soul, and Americana while maintaining their spiritual foundation. Over eight decades, they became one of America's most decorated and influential vocal groups, earning Grammy Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2022), performing at the highest concert halls and festivals worldwide. Their influence extends across generations of musicians and remains a touchstone of American sacred and secular music.
