Cherry Jones is a two-time Tony Award–winning American actress whose commanding presence and emotional depth have made her one of the most celebrated stage performers of her generation, equally at home in classical drama and contemporary television.
Defining moments and milestones
Cherry Jones began her professional career as a founding member of the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge in 1980, establishing herself as a classically trained ensemble player before making her Broadway debut in 1987. Her breakthrough came with her Tony-winning performance as Catherine Sloper in *The Heiress* (1995), followed by a second Tony for her shattering portrayal of Sister Aloysius in *Doubt* (2005), performances that revealed her as one of America's finest dramatic actresses. Since then, she has sustained a remarkable dual career in theatre and television, earning three Emmy Awards for guest roles in prestige dramas while continuing to command major Broadway and regional stages with undiminished authority.
Two-time Tony Award winner for Best Actress in a Play: *The Heiress* (1995) and *Doubt* (2005); three-time Primetime Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (*24*, 2009) and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series (*The Handmaid's Tale*, 2019; *Succession*, 2020)
