Christophe Rousset emerged from elite French and Dutch conservatory training to win the Bruges Harpsichord Competition in 1983, establishing himself as a harpsichordist of exceptional musicological authority through performances at Europe's leading early music festivals and as a founding member of Les Arts Florissants. His transition to conducting in 1991—marked by the founding of his own ensemble, Les Talens Lyriques, and his debut at the Opéra Comique—opened a parallel career that has made him one of the continent's most sought-after interpreters of Baroque opera, conducting at the Metropolitan Opera, Glyndebourne, and major European opera houses. Now in his seventh decade, Rousset remains an active force in both performance and pedagogy, shaping the next generation of early music musicians while maintaining an exacting artistic vision rooted in historical practice and dramatic authenticity.
