Soprano (lyric)
An Australian-American lyric soprano of Sri Lankan Burgher heritage, Danielle de Niese has captivated international audiences with her radiant stage presence and virtuosic command of both baroque and contemporary repertoire, from Handel's Cleopatra to musical theatre.
Defining moments and milestones
De Niese's precocious talent—operatic debut at fifteen with Los Angeles Opera—was cultivated through elite training at the Colburn School and Mannes College, culminating in her 1998 Metropolitan Opera debut as Barbarina in *The Marriage of Figaro*. Her international breakthrough arrived with her luminous 2005 Glyndebourne performance as Cleopatra in *Giulio Cesare*, which established her as a major baroque interpreter and opened doors at the world's premier opera houses. Over two decades, she has built a remarkably versatile career spanning baroque heroines, Mozart and Rossini roles, and musical theatre leads, becoming known for her radiant stage presence and dramatic intelligence.
