Actor
Irish actress of fearless intensity whose raw, psychologically acute performances have made her one of the most compelling voices in contemporary theatre, equally commanding on the West End, Broadway, and screen.
Defining moments and milestones
From her 2004 professional debut in Marina Carr's *By the Bog of Cats*, Denise Gough built a reputation for psychologically acute, fearless performances across London's theatres before achieving major recognition in 2015 with her creation of Emma in *People, Places & Things* at the National Theatre. Her subsequent origination of Harper Pitt in the 2017 National Theatre revival of *Angels in America*—a role she carried to Broadway in 2018—established her as a major interpreter of contemporary drama, while her film and television work in *Andor*, *Colette*, and *Under the Banner of Heaven* has extended her reach to international audiences. Now an established figure in contemporary theatre, she continues to seek out challenging, complex material across stage, screen, and streaming platforms.
Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in 2016 for her role as Emma in *People, Places & Things*
