His melodramas—most notably *London Assurance* and *The Colleen Bawn*—revolutionized theatrical structure and audience engagement, while his tireless advocacy for copyright protection transformed the legal status of playwrights. Across a career spanning six decades, he worked as actor, playwright, manager, and innovator on stages from Dublin to London to New York, becoming one of the nineteenth century's most influential theatrical figures.
