Hvorostovsky trained in the rigorous Soviet conservatory system before making his professional debut in 1986 at Krasnoyarsk Opera, but it was his 1989 victory at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition that opened the doors of the world's greatest opera houses. Over three decades, he became the preeminent baritone interpreter of the Russian and Italian repertoires, with Eugene Onegin as his signature role and a discography spanning the complete Verdi baritone canon. His career was marked by an unwavering commitment to vocal beauty and dramatic authenticity, qualities that made him a standard-bearer for the baritone voice until his death from cancer in 2017.
