Director
British director of uncommon emotional intelligence and social conscience, whose revivals of canonical works and contemporary plays have earned him five Olivier Awards and established him as one of the most significant theatrical voices of his generation.
Defining moments and milestones
Beginning as an assistant director and writer at the RSC and Royal Court in the 1990s, Cooke established himself as a director of uncommon interpretive depth with his 1998 adaptation of *Arabian Nights* at the Young Vic. His career arc traces a steady ascent through institutional theatre—from the Royal Court's new-writing laboratory to major revivals at the RSC and National Theatre—marked by Olivier Awards for his direction of *The Crucible* (2007), *Ma Rainey's Black Bottom* (2016), and *Follies* (2017). In recent years, he has expanded his practice into film while maintaining his position as one of contemporary theatre's most intellectually rigorous and emotionally grounded directors.
Olivier Award for Best Director for *The Crucible* (2007, Royal Shakespeare Company); Olivier Award for Best Revival for *Ma Rainey's Black Bottom* (2016, National Theatre); Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival for *Follies* (2017, National Theatre)
Warwick University (1985, Theatre); Honorary Doctorate of Letters, Warwick University (2013)
