Mezzo-Soprano
A Canadian-Italian mezzo-soprano of extraordinary versatility, Emily D'Angelo has ascended from Toronto's musical foundations to become one of opera's most sought-after interpreters of Mozart and Baroque repertoire, distinguished by her crystalline coloratura and commanding stage presence.
Defining moments and milestones
From her orchestral debut at sixteen in Toronto, Emily D'Angelo pursued rigorous operatic training through Canada's most prestigious institutions before her 2016 operatic debut as Cherubino at Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi. Her 2018 historic sweep of all four top prizes at Operalia—the first contestant ever to achieve this—announced her arrival among the world's leading mezzo-sopranos, leading to rapid engagement across the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Bayerische Staatsoper, and Paris Opéra in the great Mozart roles. Her 2023 world premiere of *Grounded* at the Kennedy Center and subsequent opening of the Met's 2024–25 season in the same role have established her as an artist of both classical mastery and vital contemporary significance.
First contestant in Operalia's 26-year history to win all four top prizes simultaneously (2018); also first vocalist ever to receive the Leonard Bernstein Award from the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (2019)
