Farquhar began his professional life as an actor in Dublin before transitioning to playwriting, where he achieved rapid prominence with comedies that departed from strict Restoration conventions. His masterwork, The Recruiting Officer, premiered to great acclaim and established him as a major dramatist of his era. Though he died at only thirty years old, his final play, The Beaux' Stratagem, proved an even greater success and secured his legacy as one of English drama's most inventive comic voices.
