Baritone (Verdi baritone)
Un Ballo in Maschera as Renato · Opernhaus Zürich · Aug 29, 2026
Emerging from Cluj-Napoca's conservatory tradition under the tutelage of legendary baritones Vicente Sardinero and Giorgio Zancanaro, George Petean made his professional debut in 1997 as Don Giovanni at the Romanian National Opera in Timișoara, establishing the dramatic intensity and vocal command that would define his career. Over the following two decades, he ascended to the upper echelon of European opera, becoming the preeminent interpreter of the Verdi baritone repertoire—a mastery demonstrated through his opening performances at Rome's Teatro dell'Opera and La Scala, the latter making him the first Romanian male opera singer to inaugurate that house's season twice. Today, Petean stands as a commanding presence at the world's greatest opera houses, celebrated for his interpretations of Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra, and Nabucco, and honored by his native Romania with the National Order "Pentru Merit" in 2019.
Opened the 2018/19 season at La Scala as Ezio in Verdi's Attila under Riccardo Chailly, becoming the first Romanian male opera singer to open a season at La Scala twice (2018)
