After training at the Australian Ballet School and graduating from the Institute of Choreology in 1978, Coyle danced with companies in Australia and Germany before establishing himself as a dance notator and repetiteur with The Scottish Ballet and Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet. His appointment as Principal Dance Notator for The Royal Ballet in 1987 launched a nearly three-decade career as custodian of the twentieth century's most significant choreographic legacy, reconstructing and transmitting ballets by Balanchine, Ashton, MacMillan, and Bintley across major international companies. Named a Fellow of the Institute of Choreology in 2008, Coyle's meticulous work preserving and communicating choreographic intent became foundational to the institutional memory of classical ballet.
