Choreographer
Israeli-born German choreographer, dancer, and composer Hofesh Shechter has emerged as one of contemporary dance's most politically urgent voices, creating visceral, rhythmically complex works that fuse classical technique with raw emotional intensity.
Defining moments and milestones
From his early training as a pianist in Jerusalem through his formative years at Batsheva Dance Company, Hofesh Shechter synthesized multiple artistic disciplines—music, dance, visual art—into a distinctive choreographic language. His 2003 professional debut with *Fragments* marked the beginning of a prolific career that would see him establish himself as a leading contemporary choreographer through works of escalating ambition and political urgency. Now based in London, Shechter commands international stages and has become known for large-scale productions that interrogate collective experience and social anxiety with unflinching physicality.
Appointed Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ambassador to the UK (2026); awarded an honorary OBE for Services to Dance (2018); Tony Award nomination for choreography of the Broadway revival of *Fiddler on the Roof* (2016)
