Ferrer began his career as a poet and cultural commentator in mid-twentieth-century Buenos Aires, gradually establishing himself as the intellectual voice of tango modernism. His partnership with Astor Piazzolla—beginning in the 1980s—produced landmark recordings that fused Ferrer's literary sophistication with Piazzolla's compositional innovation, fundamentally reshaping how tango was understood and performed globally. By the time of his death in 1991, Ferrer had secured his legacy as the poet-laureate of Nuevo Tango, a figure whose words gave philosophical and emotional depth to one of the world's most distinctive musical traditions.
