Bass (dramatic)
A commanding Russian bass of international stature, Ildar Abdrazakov has established himself as one of the preeminent interpreters of the dramatic bass repertoire, from Verdi's tyrants to Gounod's infernal seducer.
Defining moments and milestones
Abdrazakov's ascent from the Ufa conservatory to the world's greatest opera houses was accelerated by a string of prestigious vocal competition victories in the late 1990s, culminating in his 2000 Maria Callas triumph and subsequent La Scala debut in 2001. Over the past two decades, he has become the preeminent interpreter of the dramatic bass repertoire, commanding the stage in roles from Verdi's Boris Godunov and Attila to Gounod's Méphistophélès, performing at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera, and Bolshoi Theatre. His 2010 Grammy-winning recording of Verdi's Messa da Requiem with Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, combined with his 2023 State Prize of the Russian Federation and 2025 designation as People's Artist of the Russian Federation, establish him as one of the most significant bass voices of his generation.
Grammy Award for his recording of Verdi's Messa da Requiem with Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (2010); awarded the title of People's Artist of the Russian Federation (December 2025)
