Dalis rose to prominence as a mezzo-soprano of uncommon dramatic power, performing at the Metropolitan Opera and major European houses throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Her transition from international opera singer to company founder marked a pivotal shift in her career: in 1984, she established Opera San José, which she led as general director and transformed into a regional powerhouse celebrated for commissioning new American operas and championing underrepresented voices in the operatic canon. Her dual legacy—as both a formidable performer and a visionary administrator—secured her place among the most influential figures in late-twentieth-century American opera.
