Tenor
Signature Roles
A Scottish tenor who emerged from the Arts Educational Schools to make his professional debut in 1993, James Gillan has spent three decades establishing himself as one of British musical theatre's most reliable and versatile character-singers. His 1997 Olivier nomination for Tommy marked his arrival as a serious performer, but it was his origination of Boq in the original London Wicked (2006) and his acclaimed turn as Tray Sophisticay in Everybody's Talking About Jamie (2017) that cemented his standing as a performer of considerable emotional intelligence and vocal command. Now in his fifth decade of professional work, Gillan continues to anchor major productions across the West End and regional stages, embodying the kind of disciplined, intelligent artistry that sustains a long career in British theatre.
Nominated for the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Supporting Performance in a Musical for his role as Pinball Lad and understudy Tommy in Tommy (1997)
