Jennifer Hudson's ascent from Chicago church singer to international star began with an unexpected seventh-place finish on American Idol in 2004, a seeming setback that paradoxically launched her into the spotlight when she was cast as Effie White in Dreamgirls, earning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2006. Over the subsequent two decades, she has commanded stages from Broadway to Hollywood, building a multifaceted career as a recording artist, stage performer, and television personality while maintaining the vocal integrity and emotional authenticity that first distinguished her. Her achievement of EGOT status in 2022—becoming the youngest woman and third African American to do so—crystallized her status as one of contemporary entertainment's most accomplished and versatile artists.
