Director
Tony Award-winning director whose emotionally precise, technically masterful productions have defined contemporary Broadway, from the reimagined Wicked to intimate revivals of American classics.
Defining moments and milestones
Beginning as a working actor on Broadway in the 1980s, Joe Mantello transitioned to direction in the 1990s, establishing himself through acclaimed productions at off-Broadway institutions before achieving mainstream recognition with his Tony Award-winning 2003 revival of The Boys in the Band. His subsequent direction of Wicked cemented his status as one of Broadway's most versatile and commercially successful directors, capable of commanding both intimate dramas and large-scale musical spectacles with equal artistic authority.
