After earning his degree from Harvard and a Fulbright Scholarship to study at LAMDA, Lithgow made his professional stage debut in David Storey's *The Changing Room* at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1971, then brought the same role to Broadway in 1973, winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. Over the following five decades, he established himself as a master of both classical and contemporary drama, winning a second Tony for his performance in *Sweet Smell of Success* (2002) and earning an Olivier Award for his portrayal of Roald Dahl in *Giant* (2025), while simultaneously building a distinguished career in film and television.
