Jonathan Stafford is an American ballet dancer and artistic director who rose through the ranks of New York City Ballet to become its first leader with no direct connection to George Balanchine, steering the company into a new era while honoring its foundational legacy.
Defining moments and milestones
Jonathan Stafford entered New York City Ballet as an apprentice in 1998 and ascended through the ranks to principal dancer over sixteen years, mastering the Balanchine canon while originating roles in works by Ratmansky, Wheeldon, and Bigonzetti. His transition from the stage to leadership—first as Ballet Master in 2014, then as Artistic Director in 2019—positioned him as the first NYCB leader to have never trained directly under Balanchine himself, a distinction that has allowed him to chart a thoughtful course between institutional preservation and artistic renewal. Today, as simultaneous Artistic Director of both NYCB and the School of American Ballet, Stafford stands as a steward of one of classical ballet's most influential institutions during a critical moment of evolution.
Appointed Artistic Director of New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet in February 2019, becoming the first leader in the company's history with no direct training under George Balanchine
