Carreras rose to prominence in the 1970s as a lyric tenor of exceptional musicality, establishing himself at La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Royal Opera House in the core Verdi and Puccini repertoire. His diagnosis with leukemia in 1987 and subsequent recovery transformed him into a symbol of human resilience; his return to performing in 1988 was met with worldwide acclaim and deepened his artistic stature. The Three Tenors concerts of the 1990s catapulted him to global celebrity, and he has since maintained an active career while dedicating himself to leukemia research and patient advocacy through his foundation.
