Principal Dancer
A British principal dancer of expressive artistry and commanding stage presence, Joseph Caley has established himself as one of the most sought-after male leads in contemporary classical ballet, performing the great romantic and classical roles across the world's premier companies.
Defining moments and milestones
Trained from childhood at Skelton Hooper School of Dance in Hull before joining the Royal Ballet School in 1997, where he studied under some of ballet's most distinguished pedagogues, Joseph Caley made his professional debut with Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2005 and rose to principal dancer in 2011. Over nearly two decades, he has danced the great classical and romantic male roles across three continents—from the Ashton and MacMillan repertoire at Birmingham Royal Ballet to contemporary works at English National Ballet, where he was promoted to Lead Principal in 2017—establishing himself as one of the most versatile and expressive male dancers of his generation. His sustained demand at the highest levels of international ballet, combined with his nuanced interpretations of roles from Romeo to Siegfried, reflects an artist of rare artistry and technical command.
