Joseph A. Walker's theatrical journey began in 1955 as an actor in James Baldwin's *The Amen Corner* at Howard University, but it was his evolution as a playwright that secured his historical significance. Co-founding the musical-dance ensemble Voices, Inc. and authoring *The Believers* (1968), Walker established himself as a voice of uncompromising artistic integrity before achieving landmark success with *The River Niger*, which earned him the Tony Award for Best Play in 1974. His multifaceted career—encompassing acting, directing, choreography, and education—remained rooted in a singular commitment to centering Black consciousness and spiritual inquiry within American theatre.
