Dame Kiri Jeanette Claire Te Kanawa is a New Zealand opera singer. She has a full lyric soprano voice, which has been described as "mellow yet vibrant, warm, ample and unforced". On 1 December 1971 she was recognised internationally when she appeared as the Countess in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Royal Opera House in London.

After winning major competitions in Australia and securing a grant to study at the London Opera Centre, Te Kanawa made her professional debut at the Royal Opera House in 1970 before achieving her breakthrough performance as the Countess in *Le nozze di Figaro* at Covent Garden in December 1971. Over the next four decades, she became one of the most sought-after sopranos in the world, performing at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Salzburg, and every major opera house, while her 1981 performance at the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer brought her unprecedented international recognition. Her career, marked by vocal consistency, interpretive sophistication, and an unwavering commitment to the Mozart and Strauss repertoires, established her as one of the defining soprano voices of the twentieth century.
