Kirk Browning entered television in 1947 through a chance encounter that led him from filing scores to directing live broadcasts of the NBC Symphony and NBC Opera Company, establishing himself as the preeminent television director of classical music and opera in America. His direction of the world premiere of *Amahl and the Night Visitors* in 1951 demonstrated television's potential as a serious venue for new operatic work, while his subsequent decades directing *Live from Lincoln Center* broadcasts cemented his reputation as the architect of arts television. By the time of his death in 2008, Browning had directed more than 185 classical music and opera broadcasts, fundamentally shaping how generations of Americans encountered live performance.
