Kwangchul Youn is a South Korean bass of international stature whose commanding presence in the Wagnerian and Verdian repertoire has established him as one of the most sought-after dramatic basses of his generation.
Defining moments and milestones
From his professional debut in 1988 at Seoul State Opera, Kwangchul Youn pursued an intensive European education that culminated in his 1993 victory at the Operalia competition and subsequent Leipzig Opera debut. His 2008 performance as Gurnemanz in Stefan Herheim's new Parsifal production at Bayreuth established him as a major international bass, leading to regular engagements at the world's premier opera houses. In 2018, he achieved the singular honor of Kammersänger from the Berlin State Opera, cementing his status as one of the most distinguished dramatic basses of his era.
