Director
Laurent Pelly is a visionary French director and costume designer whose witty, theatrically inventive opera productions have redefined the aesthetics of French baroque and comic opera on the world's greatest stages.
Defining moments and milestones
Beginning as a precocious theatre director in Paris, Laurent Pelly founded his own company at eighteen and spent two decades establishing himself in French theatre before his operatic breakthrough in 1997 with *Orphée aux Enfers* at the Opéra de Lyon. His 1999 production of Rameau's *Platée* at the Opéra National de Paris marked a watershed moment, establishing him as a director of rare theatrical imagination and deep musicological understanding. Over the past two decades, Pelly has become the world's leading interpreter of French comic opera and Donizetti, with landmark productions at the Royal Opera House, Metropolitan Opera, and Santa Fe Opera that have redefined the staging of these works for contemporary audiences.
