Pier Luigi Pizzi began his career as a scenographer in 1951, apprenticing under the great directors of postwar Italian theatre before making his operatic debut as a designer with Don Giovanni in Genoa in 1952. His directorial breakthrough came in 1977 with Don Giovanni at Turin's Teatro Regio, establishing him as a visionary capable of commanding the full visual and dramatic architecture of the operatic stage. Over the following decades, Pizzi became the architect of some of Europe's most celebrated opera productions, from the opening of the Wortham Center in Houston with Aida (1987) to the inauguration of the Opéra Bastille with Les Troyens (1990), earning international acclaim and numerous honors while remaining a tireless champion of the Rossini repertoire.
