Mezzo-soprano (lyric)
Trained in the Czech musical tradition and schooled in the rigorous vocal pedagogy of Central Europe, Magdalena Kožená made her professional debut in 1996 and quickly established herself as an interpreter of exceptional refinement, particularly in Mozart and Baroque opera. Her victory at the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg (1995) presaged a career of international prominence, leading to engagements at the world's leading opera houses—the Metropolitan Opera, Salzburg Festival, Glyndebourne, and Berlin Staatsoper—where her luminous mezzo-soprano and interpretive intelligence have made her the defining Idamante and Cherubino of her era. Now recognized as an established master of the repertoire, she continues to expand her artistic reach while maintaining the chamber-music sensibility and vocal purity that have distinguished her throughout her career.
