Career Trajectory

Thierry Malandain began his professional life as a classical dancer with the Paris Opera Ballet in 1977, but his true calling emerged as a choreographer during the 1980s, when his early works demonstrated a distinctive ability to marry neoclassical rigor with contemporary sensibility. Founding Compagnie Temps Présent in 1986 and later establishing the Malandain Ballet Biarritz in 1998, he has created over eighty works while building one of France's most significant National Choreographic Centers. Now approaching retirement in 2026 after nearly three decades leading the Biarritz company, Malandain stands as a towering figure in contemporary ballet, recognized by membership in the Académie des beaux-arts and celebrated for his ability to sustain artistic innovation across multiple decades.
