Mario Sereni emerged in the mid-1950s as a baritone of uncommon musicality and dramatic conviction, quickly becoming a fixture at the Metropolitan Opera where he would remain a principal artist for nearly three decades. His interpretations of the Italian repertoire—particularly the Verdi roles that defined his career—were distinguished by a warm, well-focused baritone and an actor's sensitivity to character and text. Though his career was cut short by his death in 1981, Sereni left behind a legacy as one of the finest Italian baritones of the postwar era, a singer whose artistry transcended the vocal pyrotechnics of his era in favor of genuine dramatic and musical substance.
