Mezzo-Soprano
A powerhouse mezzo-soprano and actress who has become one of musical theatre's most commanding presences, Marisha Wallace rose from a rural North Carolina childhood to international acclaim, most notably as the first Black Sally Bowles on both the West End and Broadway.
Defining moments and milestones
From her origins in rural North Carolina, where she sang in her grandmother's church choir, Marisha Wallace developed into one of musical theatre's most commanding vocalists, earning a Drammy Award for her regional debut as Ado Annie in Oklahoma! before establishing herself on Broadway and the West End. Her West End career, beginning with Dreamgirls in 2017, saw her claim a succession of iconic roles—Motormouth Maybelle, Miss Adelaide, and Becky—that showcased her mezzo-soprano power and emotional range. Her 2025 performances as Sally Bowles in both the London Kit Kat Club production and the subsequent Broadway revival crystallized her international reputation, marking her as the first Black performer to embody the role on either stage and earning recognition as one of theatre's defining moments of the year.
