Sir David Mark Rylance Waters is an English actor, playwright and theatre director. Known for his work on stage and screen, he has received numerous awards including an Academy Award, three BAFTA Awards, two Olivier Awards and three Tony Awards. In 2016 he was included in the Time 100 list of the world's most influential people. In 2017 he was made a knight by Queen Elizabeth II.

After training at RADA under Hugh Cruttwell, Rylance made his professional debut in 1980 at Glasgow Citizens' Theatre and rose to prominence through his work with innovative companies including Shared Experience and the Royal Shakespeare Company. His thirteen-year tenure as artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (1995–2008) established him as a visionary custodian of early modern drama, while his performances in roles ranging from Benedick to Hamlet to Scrooge McDuck demonstrated an unparalleled versatility. The past two decades have seen him achieve unprecedented success across theatre, film, and television, becoming the only actor to win three Tony Awards and an Academy Award, cementing his status as the defining stage actor of his era.
