Beginning in experimental theatre with her own company and training in Lecoq-based physical theatre, Mary Birnbaum discovered her artistic calling in opera following her transformative apprenticeship on Seattle Opera's 2013 Ring cycle. Her rapid ascent—marked by a Juilliard fellowship, an Opera America showcase victory, and European recognition—has positioned her as a visionary director capable of reimagining operatic narrative through contemporary dramaturgical lens. Now serving as General and Artistic Director of Opera Saratoga while maintaining her faculty role at Juilliard, she has become a mentor and institutional leader shaping the next generation of opera makers.
