Director
Matthew Warchus is a visionary British theatre director whose Tony Award–winning staging of *God of Carnage* and transformative direction of *Matilda the Musical* have established him as one of the most inventive and commercially successful directors of his generation.
Defining moments and milestones
Warchus began his directorial career at the Edinburgh Festival in 1988 with *Sejanus: His Fall*, quickly establishing himself as a director of intellectual rigour and theatrical flair through West End productions of *Much Ado About Nothing* (1992) and *Art* (1996). His ascent to the front rank of British theatre accelerated through the 2000s with acclaimed productions at the Donmar Warehouse and Old Vic, culminating in his historic 2009 Tony Awards sweep and the subsequent global triumph of *Matilda the Musical*. As Artistic Director of the Old Vic since 2015, he has consolidated his reputation as a director of uncommon range, equally commanding in classical drama, contemporary comedy, and large-scale musical theatre.
Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for *God of Carnage* (2009); first director since 1942 to receive two Tony nominations in a single year (2009)
