Maurice Béjart emerged in post-war Europe as a radical choreographer determined to liberate ballet from classical orthodoxy, synthesizing contemporary movement, theatrical ambition, and philosophical inquiry into a new expressionistic language. Through his founding of the Ballets du XXe Siècle and later the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, he created an oeuvre of over 200 works that addressed sexuality, spirituality, and social upheaval with unprecedented directness, establishing himself as one of the twentieth century's most influential dance artists and cultural provocateurs.
