Beginning as a child actor in London productions of *Peter Pan* and *Macbeth* from 1911, Alfred Lee Willmore reinvented himself as Micheál Mac Liammóir upon emigrating to Ireland, where he became a foundational architect of modern Irish theatre. Co-founding the Gate Theatre in Dublin in 1928 with Hilton Edwards, he established an institution of international standing while simultaneously building a legendary career as an actor-designer of extraordinary range and sophistication. His seven decades of performance—encompassing classical drama, contemporary work, and celebrated solo recitals—made him one of the English-speaking theatre's most intellectually commanding and visually refined artists.
