Mourad Merzouki emerged from the streets of Lyon's hip-hop underground to become one of the world's most influential contemporary choreographers, pioneering a synthesis of acrobatic precision, street vernacular, and avant-garde collaboration. His 1989 co-founding of Accrorap and subsequent creation of Compagnie Käfig in 1996 established him as the architect of hip-hop's transformation into concert art, a trajectory crowned by his 2009 appointment as artistic director of a Centre Chorégraphique National—the first hip-hop artist to lead such an institution in France. Over three decades, Merzouki has created a body of work that dissolves boundaries between disciplines, earning international recognition and the Legion of Honour while maintaining an uncompromising commitment to innovation.
