Beginning as a stage manager at Doris Fitton's Independent Theatre in 1977, Schlieper spent seven years in production management before launching his freelance lighting design practice in 1985 with a debut at Sydney Theatre Company's Hedda Gabler in 1986. Over four decades, he has become an internationally celebrated designer whose work spans intimate psychological dramas and large-scale musical spectacles, earning him six Sydney Critics Awards, seven Melbourne Green Room Awards, five Helpmann Awards, and a 2025 Tony nomination for The Picture of Dorian Gray on Broadway.
