Ning Liang rose from China's conservatory system to become the first mainland Chinese mezzo-soprano to establish a principal career at the world's greatest opera houses, winning the Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition in 1984 and making her Metropolitan Opera debut as Octavian in *Der Rosenkavalier*. Over four decades, she has commanded the major European and American stages—La Scala, Vienna State Opera, and the Met—in a repertoire spanning Mozart and Strauss trouser roles to dramatic Verdi and contemporary commissions.
