Ning Liang rose from China's conservatory system to become the first mainland Chinese mezzo-soprano to establish a principal career at the world's greatest opera houses, winning the Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition in 1984 and making her Metropolitan Opera debut as Octavian in *Der Rosenkavalier*.
